This project was a visual identity study for a senior-level design course. Based on design precedents such as Gert Dumbar, Studio Feixen, and Ellen Lupton, we gathered qualities and insights to assist in our graphic composition. Through rounds of experimental ideation with type and form, we proposed physical and digital artifacts for the Biennale Architettura, an international exhibition of architecture from nations around the world, held in Venice, Italy.

Initial Research

Design Qualities: Gert Dumbar + Studio Feixen

Design Principles: Ellen Lupton

Physical Artifacts

Art Direction

From these insights, our approach combined image and type manipulation to induce a disorienting sort of energy. Our goal within our visual composition was to interlace different patterns and forms to create a sense of dynamic motion. The blurring and chopping of elements creates a sense of busy-ness, adding depth and readability but is balanced by the generous white space. Spotify Collections prototype user interface

Our established art direction to guide our design focus.

Digital Artifacts

To further push the flexibility of our visual approach, we analyzed how to integrate our composition in a digital space. We explored how to express our design qualities through micro-interactions in order to create a microsite for the Biennale Architettura.

Interaction Moodboard

The goal of our concept was to captivate attention by disorienting the peripheral visual and interlace figures and ground to guide the flow of content. We wanted our micro-interaction to subtly unveil content from a void.

Microinteractions that inspired and influenced our final microsite.

Conclusion

Reflection

During this 4 week process, experimenting with our creative freedom was a challenge that our team faced. Through multiple groupings and iterations we found strength in diverging and expanding our ideas. However during this process, we struggled to focus on one visual approach. From this project we learned how to converge our ideas to create a holistic composition. By analyzing our design precedents we were able to understand specific design qualities express those in our own experimentation.Overall, this experience allowed me to expand my exploration of form and type manipulation while understanding the research and process of creating a visual identity.
